Cork City have announced that Republic of Ireland international Liam Miller has signed a contract with the club, bringing his brief stay at Melbourne City FC to an end.
Miller had joined City on a short-term deal, first as a ‘National Team Replacement Player’ and then as cover for the injured Jonatan Germano. He made two appearances for John van ‘t Schip’s side.
The 33-year-old will now link up with Cork City ahead of the 2015 League of Ireland season and revealed his delight to be joining his hometown club.
“I am delighted to be returning home. I will be proud to wear the Cork City jersey and do what I can for the team in front of all my family and friends,” Miller told the club’s official website.
Miller, who has been capped 21 times for Ireland, lists Manchester United, Celtic and Sunderland among his former clubs and prior to joining Melbourne City played for Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar, where he won the A-League title last season.
Leesiders manager John Caulfield hailed the capture of Miller as “fantastic” and highlighted the midfielder’s extensive experience as an asset.
“Having a Cork lad like Liam coming home is a major signing and a big boost for us at the start of pre-season,” said Caulfield. “We are all looking forward to Liam coming in, we all know how good a player he is and it is a fantastic signing for us.”
The Cork boss added: “He has played in Europe with Celtic and Man United, and of course he has played internationally with Ireland as well, so he has huge experience, but, most importantly for me, he is still in peak condition, still at the top of his game and full of energy.
“His all round strengths mean he is going to be a fantastic addition to the squad and we are all looking forward to seeing him in training soon.”
Miller joins Kieran Djilali, Karl Sheppard, Dave Mulcahy and Gavan Holohan as new signings at Turner’s Cross.
