Mifsud returns from international duty

Melbourne Heart’s Maltese international Michael Mifsud returned to training for the Red and White today, after featuring for Malta in two World Cup qualifiers.

Melbourne Heart FC’s Maltese international Michael Mifsud returned to training for the Red and White on Tuesday, after featuring for Malta in two World Cup qualifiers.

Mifsud made his 100th appearance for his country in a 4-1 loss to Czech Republic last week, marking the occasion with Malta’s solitary goal and his 38th for his country.

Mifsud drew praise from his opposite number, Chelsea’s goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Cech was quoted in the Times of Malta as saying that Mifsud is “Malta’s best player and best scorer”.

“When Malta counter-attack, he makes the difference as he keeps running and chasing the ball,” Cech said.

“He [Mifsud] is the player who has scored most goals in the history of Malta. His move to Melbourne is a reward for a player who keeps scoring goals. And to reach 100 caps is a big thing for him.”

Malta suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Denmark in the other qualifying match last week.

Mifsud returned to Melbourne on the weekend and is set to travel with the team to Perth for this Sunday’s clash against Perth Glory at nib Stadium.
