Three wins in a row has Wellington Phoenix flying high and they jet across the ditch to play a Melbourne Victory searching for a spark to end their worst ever Hyundai A-League start.
Marco Kurz’s men have collected only eight points from their opening nine games. One silver lining is that, in 2017/18, Victory also won two of their first nine and went on to lift the Championship. Something needs to change in Melbourne, fast, for them to rediscover that kind of form.
Phoenix’s revival has been an example of what Victory need to achieve over the coming weeks. Ufuk Talay’s team have hit their straps with Ulises Davila becoming the Kiwi club’s talisman, racking up six goals from the opening eight games of the season.
One more goal at AAMI Park and the Mexican playmaker will become the first player in Wellington’s history to score in five straight. A fourth win would likely push Phoenix into top-four territory, while Victory could quickly surge up the ladder. Despite currently being 10th, they are only two points back from Wellington in fifth.
