Melbourne Victory Afghan Women’s team make special debut

It was a special day for the Melbourne Victory Afghan Women’s team, who played their first match since arriving in Australia.

All eyes have been on Afghanistan Women’s National Team (AWNT) since they landed in Melbourne, having fled their homeland in August last year as the Taliban regained control of the country.

A-Leagues club Victory have come to the aid of AWNT, supporting their return to competitive action. In February, Victory announced they would play under the team’s banner in 2022, with reigning Liberty A-League Championship-winning head coach Jeff Hopkins leading their return to football.

On Sunday, the Afghan women were back doing what they love best – playing football.

In their Football Victoria State League 4 West debut, Melbourne Victory Afghan Women drew 0-0 against ETA Buffalo SC at Delahey Reserve.
