Melbourne derby takes centre stage for armchair fans

The first-ever Melbourne Westfield W-League derby is the high-quality offering for viewers of Fox Sports and ABC this Sunday.

It promises to be entertaining derby fare despite the two combatants enduring contrasting fortunes to open their respective seasons.

Melbourne City started life in the Westfield W-League with a barely believable 6-0 win over the usually tough Sydney FC on Sunday.

Victory, for their part, showed plenty of promise in opening the scoring against reigning premiers Perth Glory, who needed goals from Westfield Matildas’ superstars Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr in order to collect a 2-1 win last Saturday.

City have recruited impressively for their opening campaign, and that was duly reflected in their win over the Sky Blues which will surely be long remembered as one of the most remarkable results in Westfield W-League history.

However, with the Westfield Matildas away in China this weekend, the difference between the two squads – on paper at least – looks marginal.

What is certain is that local rivalry will, as is the case in the Hyundai A-League, add an extra layer to this contest leaving TV viewers around the country as the winners.

Watch all the action Live from 2.00pm nationally on Fox Sports (Channel 505), or ABC TV. Or catch-up on ABC iView.
