Melbourne City claim fourth Club Championship title

Melbourne City have claimed their second consecutive A-Leagues Club Championship, taking out the combined Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s and Ninja A-League Women’s competition points tally.

This is City’s fourth Club Championship since the trophy’s inception, taking out all but one of the titles after its launch at the beginning of the 2021/22 season.

City’s Club Championship was headlined by the Ninja A-League side’s third consecutive Premiership title as Michael Matricciani’s team picked up 40 points in their 20 matches this season.

Despite this points tally being the lowest in the club’s historic three-peat in the Ninja A-League, City’s Isuzu UTE A-League late season form has seen the club storm home to overtake Adelaide United and the Newcastle Jets, taking out the crown with two matches remaining in the regular season.

“Congratulations to Melbourne City on another standout season across the Isuzu UTE A-League and Ninja A-League,” A-Leagues CEO, Steve Rosich said.

“The club’s record in the Club Championship is testament to City’s commitment to their men’s and women’s programs, harnessing top talent and continuing to develop some of the best players across our leagues.”

He added: “The Club Championship is a unique tradition in the sporting landscape, where we can celebrate a club’s achievements across both the men’s and women’s competitions.

“This trophy exemplifies a ‘one club’ approach that we’re incredibly proud to showcase as a code, and Melbourne City continues to set the standard locally and abroad.”

Melbourne City’s next match in the Isuzu UTE A-League is against Brisbane Roar on Saturday 18 April at Suncorp Stadium as the side pushes to maintain its top six spot.

Meanwhile in the Ninja A-League, Premier’s Melbourne City have a break for week one of the Finals Series before a two-legged Semi Final showdown starting on the weekend of 1-3 May.

In 2023-24 the Central Coast Mariners nabbed the trophy away from Melbourne for the first time.

Mark Jackson’s side enjoyed an incredible season which saw them capture a treble of the AFC Cup and the Isuzu UTE A-League Premiership/Championship double whilst Emily Husband’s Ninja A-League side reached the semi-finals in their first season back in the competition.

The Club Championship trophy’s stay in Gosford was short-lived though, because Melbourne City soon regained the title.

In 2024-25 Michael Matricciani’s Ninja A-League side went the whole regular season unbeaten as they clinched the Premiership before Aurelio Vidmar’s Isuzu UTE A-League side finished second in the regular season before winning the Championship.

The winner will be awarded the trophy at this year’s Dolan Warren Awards.
