He’s started the season in stunning fashion and Melbourne City winger Bruce Kamau hopes a continued run of form will lead to a Caltex Socceroos call-up.
Kamau has scored three goals in four matches in City’s perfect start to the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 Season, making him the October nominee for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year award.
He credits a full pre-season and a clear game-plan from coach Warren Joyce for his consistent form so far.
Asked his aspirations for the rest of the campaign, Kamau said: “More goals first of all and a title of course.
“Being minor premiers and also winning the grand final is also up there on my list and also playing for my country.
“Of course [playing for the Caltex Socceroos is a target].
“If you don’t back yourself why would anyone else. That’s something on my list of goals for the future.”
The 22-year-old has made three appearances for Australia’s Uner-23 team but has yet to catch the eye of Caltex Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou.
But the immediate focus for Kamau is Friday night’s top-of-the-table clash with Sydney FC at AAMI Park.
While City’s early season results have been built around a solid defensive set-up, they are getting the goods from their attacking players like Kamau, Nick Fitzgerald and Ross McCormack.
Already with three goals to his name this is easily Kamau’s most prolific season, but the ex-Adelaide United star wants more.
“Once you start scoring you realise it’s something you are capable of,” he said.
“It gives you that confidence to get on the scoresheet more and find yourself in those positions and back yourself to put the ball in the back of the net.
“Definitely this season is an important one for myself. I’m looking to play my best football and having a good start to the season is something that will build confidence and will help me to continue playing well.”
The Hyundai A-League clash between City and the Sky Blues is part of a huge double header at AAMI Park, with a Westfield W-League Derby between City and Melbourne Victory to begin proceedings at 5.20pm.
