Melbourne City announce new captain following 4-1 win over WSW

Melbourne City have announced Scott Jamieson as their new captain for the upcoming Hyundai A-League season, following a 4-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at Shepparton Sports City on Friday night.

Not bad for a birthday present, Jamieson turning 30 on Saturday when City announced his appointment.

Florin Berenguer stole all the plaudits the night before though, grabbing a goal and assist, as well as having an involvement in City’s third goal.

The hosts started on the attack, and were rewarded 21 minutes in when Harrison Delbridge met Berenguer’s cross with a fierce header to fire the City in front.

Minutes later, the Frenchman grabbed a goal of his own. Lachlan Wales burst down the right flank and served Berenguer with a chance to head home — which he duly obliged.

Markus Babbel’s men almost mounted a comeback thanks to a long-range effort from Abraham Majok; City leading 2-1 at the interval.

The Wanderers would find themselves two goals behind once more after Majok handled a Berenguer cross in the box. Dario Vidosic, who came on for Lachlan Wales, slotted home City’s third.

The home side put an exclamation mark on their performance with a Riley McGree beauty. The youngster received the ball from newly-appointed captain, Scott Jamieson, before dancing around two defenders and firing the ball into the top right corner.

Melbourne City take on Melbourne Victory in the first Melbourne Derby of Season 2018/19 at Marvel Stadium on Saturday, October 20. Kick off is at 7:50pm.

The Wanderers, meanwhile, must collect themselves before they travel to Perth Glory’s nib Stadium on Sunday, October 21 to take on their former Head Coach, Tony Popovic. Kick off is at 7pm AEST.
