Jets midfielder McGree undaunted by Sky Blues machine

It may be the boldness of youth, but Riley McGree insists there’s no trepidation in the Newcastle Jets camp as they attempt to stop the Sydney FC juggernaut.

The two sides meet in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table Hyundai A-League clash at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.

And McGree believes the Jets won’t be deviating from their attack-minded approach against the runaway league-leaders.

“I don’t think it’s daunting at all,” McGree told media at the start of match-week.

“We’re pretty keen to go in and get a result and play our attacking style of football and create chances.

“We’ll put in a good week on the training ground and see what happens on the weekend.”

Newcastle have enjoyed a stellar 2017/18 season, locking in finals football for the first time since 2009/10 and topping 40 points for the first time ever.

“I think there’s confidence ahead of every game,” said McGree.

“We’ve got quality players on the pitch so we go into every game expecting to fight and get a result.

“That’s going to be the main task on the weekend.”

The 19-year-old loanee from Brugge earned post-match plaudits from coach Ernie Merrick after his first start for the Jets last weekend.

And the fringe Caltex Socceroo believes he’s a good fit at the club.

“I really think I suit Ernie’s style,” said McGree.

“His style is very direct and getting in the zone to score.

“I love scoring goals – most players do!”
