One Central Coast Mariner extra keen for a big performance in Saturday night’s friendly against Celtic at ANZ Stadium is midfielder Michael McGlinchey.
McGlinchey grew up in Scotland dreaming of playing for the Scottish glamour club.
His dream was realised when, at 16, he signed his first professional contract with Celtic.
Then in December 2005 he made his first team debut for the club off the bench. But serious injury and the change of manager saw McGlinchey’s time with the first team cut short.
He took the plunge and came to Australia two years ago and has been a constant in the Mariners’ Hyundai A-League side since arriving.
McGlinchey cannot wait for kick off on Saturday night.
“I never thought I’d be playing against Celtic in Australia, it’s a match I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” McGlinchey said.
“They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world so it’s great for me and the club to get a chance to play them.”
“Hopefully we get a big crowd.”
Despite boasting only one top team appearance for Celtic, McGlinchey has fond memories of his time at the club.
“I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said.
“Looking back, I probably stayed there two years too long trying to hold on to the dream.”
“But I gave it a good go and I’m thankful for everything they did for me.”
“I came to Australia and now I’m very happy at the Mariners. I know all the boys are really looking forward to Saturday night.”
