The Northern Irishman, Sydney’s last remaining foundation player, confirmed on Monday he would be hanging up his boots at the end of the season after nine successful seasons at the club.
Two of those campaigns were alongside Carney, including the championship-winning Sky Blues side in the inaugural season of the Hyundai A-League in 2005/06.
That stint at Sydney was the start of Carney’s professional career and he admitted he learned a lot from McFlynn during his time in the Harbour City.
“He (McFlynn) always gave 110 percent whether it was at training or in a game, every single session he’d give it his all,” the Socceroos defender told www.footballaustralia.com.au.
“He was a leader and always led by example which is something I remember about him.
“But he was also a great character and always full of banter. Terry was great around the boys and everyone you speak to can’t say a bad word about him.
“Terry was a great player and a great lad to have around the team…he always gave it his all.”
McFlynn, who has made a record 178 appearances for Sydney, has endured an injury-disrupted season for the Sky Blues.
The 33-year-old will miss Sunday’s final regular season match against Perth Glory with a thigh complaint and is long odds to return in time for the finals.
Carney believes a player of his experience and dedication to the cause will be difficult to replace.
“Sydney FC were very lucky to have him for so long,” the Newcastle Jets man said.
“He’s won two titles with them and he’s been the longest serving player for Sydney FC and he’s a very loyal person.
“As a player he had fantastic ability and would always do the best for the team. He was a great lad and a close friend of mine.
“That kind of player is not easy to replace.”
While McFlynn will be honoured at Sydney’s final home match against the Glory on Sunday, Carney will be hoping the visitors can spoil the celebrations.
The Jets need to beat Adelaide in their final match on Friday night and then hope Sydney lose to have any hope of reaching the top six.
