McDonald opened the scoring 17 minutes before the break with a typically clinical finish.

The 36-year-old, who will play in the Hyundai A-League for the first time in 2019/20 after almost two decades abroad, thrilled the crowd of more than 2000 with his maiden United goal.

Despite dominating possession and chances, United were unable to double their lead until five minutes from time.

The match-sealer came from the penalty spot, converted by former Bentleigh Greens attacker Valentine Yuel.

Yuel, who scored United’s first-ever goal in their inaugural match against Caroline Springs George Cross, has now scored in all three of the club’s pre-season friendlies.
