Matt Simon named Mariners club captain

Matt Simon says he’s honoured to lead the Central Coast Mariners into battle for the upcoming Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season.

The veteran striker was announced Mariners club captain earlier today as the club prepares to kick off their campaign away to Brisbane on Sunday.

Central Coast’s all-time leading goalscorer will become the club’s sixth full time captain when he dons the armband against the Roar, joining a cohort that includes the likes of Alex Wilkinson, John Hutchinson and Nick Montgomery.

“This is a really proud moment for myself coming back to the club where it all began,” Simon told the Mariners’ official website.

“To be able to captain the team this year in such a promising time is very exciting and we’re all looking forward to what’s ahead this season.

“I want to lead with my actions. I’ve always been the type of player to talk on the field, the biggest thing for me is not to change the way I play, it’s always important to ensure you lead with your individual performances.”
