Logarzo ignites World Cup charge with Western move: ‘There’s no better time to return home’

Matildas midfielder Chloe Logarzo has signed a loan deal with Liberty A-League club Western United, joining the expansion side from Kansas City in a bid to return to the peak of her powers prior to the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Logarzo has been an integral member of the Matildas since her debut in 2013, capped 54 times prior to suffering an ACL injury in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in September, 2021.

The 27-year-old was recalled to Tony Gustavsson’s Matildas squad this month for two games against Canada, nearly one year on from the injury.

Logarzo played in neither game, but spent valuable time with the squad in a bid to reacquaint herself with the national team setup.

Now, Logarzo will use the 2022-23 ALW season to return to full fitness and launch toward next year’s World Cup on home soil.

“I am really excited to be returning to the A-League with a new club, new city and a new challenge ahead of the World Cup,” she said.

“There is no better time to return home to the A-League than now, leading into the World Cup and with Western United, a new and ambitious club.

“I feel incredibly confident that this is the correct decision for my return to playing.”

Western United head coach Mark Torcaso added: “Chloe’s game needs no explanation, she is a world class talent and she will be huge for our group and for the league.

“I’m really excited and proud that we can give Chloe a platform to continue her return to the pitch ahead of the World Cup next year.

“She is the type of player that can change a game in an instant and I can’t wait to work with her and see her help us on the pitch, but also off the pitch with the knowledge she can share with our younger players.”

Logarzo, previously of Sydney FC, won two ALW championships with the Sky Blues. The midfielder has enjoyed stints at Colorado Pride and Washington Spirit in the United States, Avaldsnes in Norway, Swedish outfit Eskilstuna United, and Bristol City in England.

She will link up with the Western squad in November ahead of the 2022-23 ALW season.
