Melbourne Victory forward Emily Gielnik and Brisbane Roar winger Sharn Freier have been called into the CommBank Matildas squad for April’s friendly against Mexico after injuries to three key members of the national team squad.
Gielnik and Freier are joined by former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City defender Winonah Heatley in bolstering Tony Gustavsson’s CommBank Matildas squad after injuries to Katrina Gorry, Clare Hunt and Courtney Nevin.
Gorry suffered an ankle injury while playing for club side West Ham in the Women’s Super League (WSL), while Paris Saint-Germain defender Hunt and Leicester City full-back Nevin have been ruled out by their respective foot and hip injuries.
Freier receives her very first senior international call-up having impressed for Brisbane alongside Matildas star Tameka Yallop in the Liberty A-League this season.
The 22-year-old has three goals and five assists to her name prior to the final round of the campaign, and will link up with Gustavsson’s squad after Brisbane’s Round 22 clash with Canberra United.
