Sharn Freier’s emotional letter to sister Laini after Matildas debut: ‘You f*****g deserve it’

Laini Freier’s CommBank Matildas debut was sweet enough but a wholesome message from twin sister Sharn made it even sweeter.

On Monday (AEDT), A-Leagues phenomenon Laini Freier debuted for Australia in their 2-1 loss to world number one the United States at the prestigious SheBelieves Cup.

While twin sister and Brisbane Roar teammate Sharn Freier is sidelined for the remainder of the season through injury, Laini Freier’s bow meant the Freiers are the first twins and second sisters to represent the senior Matildas.

After the game in Arizona, Network 10 shared a special letter from Sharn Freier to an emotional Laini, who is only 11 league games and seven goals into her professional career.

“Waini, you have no idea how damn proud of you I am for not only making your first Tillies camp but for also earning your debut and cap number 236,” Sharn Freier wrote.

“You have literally played less than 20 professional games and have already been called up to the national team and made a name for yourself. You know why, because you f*****g deserve it.

“You are breaking records and not even realising how big it is. I know sometimes people don’t take you seriously or think that you don’t really care but I have watched you overcome some pretty big injuries (even if you did the bare minimum haha), you still worked for it and still put the effort in to get back on the field.

“Every time you step onto the field whether that be training or a game, you work your butt off and never throw the towel in. I love that about you. I love that you can be in such a mood sometimes, but it never affects how much you try. You have proven to absolutely everyone why you deserved the chance to play in the A-League and now you’ve taken it even further.

“Playing with you is the main reason I fell in love with this sport. It’s not very often anyone can say that they have played in the same team as their best friend for as long as we have and for the teams we have. Every single time we create something together on the field, it’s always special because we are doing it together.

“One day soon I hope we will be playing for the national team together but right now I want you to know that I am so so proud of you girl and I want you understand how much you deserve this. You just played football for your country on your own. Not because we are twins and all that stuff but because you are an unreal player. You are Laini Freier and you got yourself here.

“I can’t wait for you to show the world what you’ve got moving forward because it truly is amazing. I will always have your back and be your biggest fan, I promise.

“You have earned this moment. I’m beyond proud. Congratulations Waini, I love you so so much!”
