Katrina Gorry is heading back to Europe after the Brisbane Roar star agreed to join Swedish club Vittsjo.
The move to the Damallsvenskan outfit, once the Liberty A-League concludes, represents a reunion with Matildas star and former Roar team-mate Clare Polkinghorne.
Gorry returned to Liberty A-League club Roar from Norwegian outfit Avaldsnes in 2020 and the 78-time Australia international has been in inspired form since the birth of her first child Harper in August last year.
The 29-year capped her 100th Roar appearance with a goal in Saturday’s heart-breaking 2-1 defeat to Melbourne City and is now preparing for life abroad.
”I’m really excited to be joining Vittsjo GIK for the upcoming season,” Gorry told the club’s official website, having revealed a move to Europe was on the horizon during her appearance on The Official A-Leagued Podcast last month.
“I´ve heard a lot of positive things about the club and team. I´m looking forward to getting over there and meet everyone.”
Gorry – who continues to juggle life as a mother and footballer – is no stranger to life overseas, having also played for Ottawa Fury, FC Kansas City, Vegalta Sendai and Utah Royals FC.
She declined a callup for Australia’s Women’s Asian Cup campaign in India, where the Matildas crashed out in the quarter-finals.
Gorry has scored three goals in eight A-League Women appearances this season and her departure at the end of he campaign will leave a big hole in Brisbane.
“Katrina is a very exciting profile and we are incredibly positive about signing such a qualified player,” said Erika Nilsson.
“Hiring a single parent who takes their daughter to a new country is of course a challenge and places demands on us as a club in many ways. But we have a very good network of contacts around the club and we have many “nannies” who look forward to meeting both Katrina and her little Harper.
“We have another Australian national team player and another Vittsjo baby and we really like that.”
