There’s an aura of positivity around Gosford as the Mariners roll into Matchweek 7 high on confidence, but their next opponents Western United have shown time and again they are both willing and capable to crash the party.
The Mariners ended Matchweek 6 on top of the A-League table after an outstanding comeback win over Melbourne City, and play host to United at Central Coast Stadium on Sunday evening.
Alen Stajcic’s side come up against a United outfit with a mixed bag of results under their belt to start the 2020/21 A-League campaign. Two draws, one loss and one manic win secured in a nine-goal thriller against Perth put the Green and Black ninth on the table leading into Matchweek 7.
But with just four games played compared to the Mariners’ six, Mark Rudan will be confident his United side can climb into the top half of the table and challenge the league leaders, beginning with a win over the Mariners in Gosford.
In the 2019/20 campaign United experienced got the better of the Mariners; The A-League newcomers lost the first meeting before dispatching Central Coast for 3-0 and 6-2 losses as the Green and Black charged toward the Finals Series.
