Central Coast Mariners have a chance to return to the A-League summit when they host Melbourne City in Gosford on Wednesday night.
Alen Stajcic’s high-flyers were dealt a 2-1 loss by Wellington Phoenix on Sunday, as Ulises Davila and Jaushua Sotirio scored either side of Alou Kuol’s third A-League goal.
It was Central Coast’s second loss of the campaign, and one which saw Brisbane Roar stay top after their 3-1 win over Adelaide United a day earlier.
But the Mariners can regain early lead of the competition if they draw or win against City.
Patrick Kisnorbo’s team lost 3-1 to Perth Glory in their Sunday fixture. City dominated the contest after Jamie Maclaren cancelled out Daniel Stynes’ early opener but were hit with two late sucker punches from Dane Ingham and Nick D’Agostino.
City are in eight position after two wins and two draws from four matches.
