Melbourne Victory’s 2020/21 A-League campaign gets underway against Brisbane Roar on Saturday afternoon, with the club intent on putting an uncharacteristically dour season behind them and climb back into Finals Series contention.
Victory finished tenth in the 2019/20 season, their worst-ever finish to an A-League campaign.
The significantly substandard performance in a season which garnered just six wins called for an enormous off-season reshuffle, and that’s exactly what has taken place under Grant Brebner, who secured the permanent Head Coach role after his interim spell in the job at the end of the previous campaign.
A number of high profile recruits have made their way through the doors, including Callum McManaman, Rudy Gestede, Jacob Butterfield and Ben Folami who will all look to contribute to Victory’s rapid resurgence.
But Warren Moon and his Brisbane Roar outfit will not be willing to make things easy for their hosts.
The Roar travel to AAMI Park stinging from a Matchweek 1 loss to Melbourne City, albeit a slender one at a margin of one goal to nil.
New signing Riku Danzaki impressed on debut as the Roar bossed the opening stanza of their first clash of the season but a moment of individual class from Connor Metcalfe picked them apart in the second half to ensure Moon’s side began the season with a loss.
Now, the Roar must move on quickly and impress on the road against the Victory to ensure their own campaign doesn’t begin with back-to-back losses.
