Matchweek 10 preview: Melbourne Victory v Western United

The challenges continue to come thick and fast for Melbourne Victory, as a tough contest with in-form Western United presents itself to Grant Brebner’s side in Matchweek 10.

The second Battle of the Bridge in the space of a month will take place at Marvel Stadium on Saturday evening after the two sides played out a 0-0 draw in Matchweek 6. The result ended United’s 100% win record over Victory in the A-League after Mark Rudan’s side enjoyed three wins from three over their local rivals in the 2019/20 A-League campaign.

Victory took three points from Wellington Phoenix in their last A-League outing in Matchweek 9. It was just the second win of the season for Victory; a result which snapped a three-game losing streak beginning after the 0-0 draw with United on January 30.

The Green and Black have played two games (six) less than Victory (eight) to date in the 2020/21 campaign, and sit one point above their Matchweek 10 opponents in tenth place on the A-League table.

A 4-1 win over Macarthur FC last time out helped United kick-start their season, with Besart Berisha, Alessandro Diamanti and Iker Guarrotxena impressing in attack. Intent on capitalising on games in hand to rise up the table, Rudan’s side will not hesitate to deal their local rivals another defeat should Victory not bring the same level of quality produced against the Phoenix.
