Melbourne City will be eager to make sure there is no Grand Final hangover when Jamie Maclaren and company head to Redcliffe to face the Brisbane Roar in their season opener on Tuesday.
City missed out on lifting their first A-League silverware following a dramatic extra-time defeat against Sydney FC in the big dance four months ago, and have since seen assistant Patrick Kisnorbo step up to replace outgoing coach Erick Mombaerts in Bundoona.
Golden Boot winner Maclaren will aim to get back in among the goals against his former club, who will be spearheaded by Scott McDonald after the 37-year-old rolled back the years to deliver some vintage displays while firing the Roar to fourth place in his debut A-League campaign last season.
The last meeting between these teams at Dolphin Stadium was an instant classic when then Brisbane striker Roy O’Donovan and Maclaren both netted hat-tricks as the Queenslanders came back from two goals down to win 4-3 in November 2019.
In front of another packed crowd, Warren Moon’s side will be desperate to give the Redcliffe faithful a similar feel-good experience as the Roar begin life in their new home for the 2020/21 campaign.
