Matchday Saturday preview: A-League, May 15

Central Coast Mariners travel to McDonald Jones Stadium to face Newcastle Jets in the second F3 Derby of the 2020/21 A-League campaign on Saturday, May 15.

The Jets and Mariners battle it out in the second game of Matchday Saturday, with the first taking place at MARS Stadium as Western United welcome Sydney FC to Ballarat.

The Mariners are desperate for three points after notching just one win in their last 10 games. After leading the league through the opening stages of the season Alen Stajcic’s side now face the possibility of missing out on the Finals Series altogether if they fail to arrest the slump in form.

Newcastle are on a 12-game winless streak, but will take confidence from a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Sydney FC in Matchweek 20. The Jets were on the way to victory before a Nigel Boogaard own goal conceded a share of the points to the Sky Blues late in the game.

Craig Deans welcomes Johnny Koutroumbis and Ramy Najjarine back from injury, while Marco Ureña returns from suspension for the visitors.

Sydney FC travel to face Western United in the first game of Matchday Saturday, with a pair of big names returning to the fray for the Sky Blues.

Luke Brattan is back after serving his one-match suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards – as is Adam Le Fondre, the star striker who re-signed with the club in mid-April.

Le Fondre has completed his two-week quarantine spell after a stint with Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC, and will look to instantly add to his 45 goals in Sky Blue to date.

Western United are hurting after suffering three successive defeats. The first came in energy-sapping fashion, when Brisbane Roar scored a last-gasp winner at a rain-soaked Moreton Daily Stadium. United went on to lose 5-0 to Western Sydney Wanderers and 3-0 to Perth Glory in Matchweek 20, putting Mark Rudan’s team behind the eight ball as they plan a late push toward the Finals Series standings.

Adam Le Fondre completed his mandatory two-weeks of quarantine and is ready to feature for the Sky Blues
