Match Preview: Western Sydney Wanderers v Canberra United

Canberra United travel to Spotless Stadium at 5:20pm AEDT on Friday with a spring in their step, following a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Sydney FC in Round 5.

Heather Garriock’s side were unlucky not to have put more goals past the Sky Blues, were it not for an in-form Sky Blues custodian Aubrey Bledsloe denying them on five occasions.

That win snapped a two-game losing streak for Canberra, who had lost 2-0 and 1-0 to Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets respectively in the lead-up to their victory over Sydney.

For Western Sydney Wanderers, the equation is simple: They need to win – and quickly.

Kylie Lebdrook appeared to galvanise her side with a sensational strike from almost 40 metres out but it wasn’t enough to restore parity as the Wanderers lost 2-1 to Melbourne Victory.

There were certainly positive signs to take from that game, not least the fact that the Wanderers finally notched their first goal of the campaign. Now, they just need to convert goals into wins.

At the other end of the pitch, Dan Barrett’s side have conceded 10 goals this season, an average of two per game. Should they have any hopes of stringing together wins, a fixing the holes at the back may be a good place to start.

Currently in equal fourth on seven points, a win for Canberra would go a long way to cementing a finals place they missed out on by four points last season.
