At long last, Perth Glory and Canberra will face off on Wednesday, January 5 after the postponement of the Round 3 fixture between the two teams originally scheduled for mid-December.
Perth were on a roll heading into Round 3, winning two games on the trot to start the campaign. But their progress was halted by postponed fixtures; Alex Epakis’ team returned to action on New Years Day – 22 days after beating Brisbane Roar 1-0 in Round 2 – and lost 4-2 to Adelaide United.
Perth now sit fifth on the Liberty A-League table, having played the equal-least amount of games of any side to date.
The other team sharing Perth’s total of three games played is Canberra.
Vicki Linton’s team began the season with back-to-back losses, and looked set to record a third defeat on the bounce when trailing Brisbane Roar 3-1 in Round 4. A stirring comeback was to follow, inspired by Grace Maher’s 87th-minute free-kick and sealed by Holly Caspers’ equaliser in stoppage time.
The 3-3 draw earned United their first point of the season – a total the finals aspirants will not be satisfied with heading into a meeting with Perth.
Originally scheduled as a home game for Glory, this encounter will take place on neutral ground at Wanderers Football Park. A win to Epakis’ Perth will send the West Australian’s above Melbourne Victory into third spot on the Liberty A-League table.
