Melbourne Heart seem to adore playing against Newcastle Jets. When statisticians take a look back through the history books they will see that the side from Victoria scored their debut Hyundai A-League goal against the Jets, secured their first point against them and also achieved their first ever away win at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
So Heart will certainly be looking forward to welcoming the New South Wales side to AAMI Park to see what landmark they can pass against them this time.
Heart-s first ever goal was actually scored by a Jets player. Ben Kantarovski has the dubious honour of being the man who netted the newcomers- debut strike in the 1-1 draw between the sides at EnergyAustralia Stadium back in Week 2.
The Jets midfielder-s own goal handed Heart their first point in the Hyundai A-League in a game dominated by Newcastle. Having taken a deserved lead in the 60th minute via World Cup New Zealander Jeremy Brockie, they looked set to pick up their first win of the season until Kantarovski-s defensive blunder 12 minutes from full-time allowed the Heart grab an unlikely share of the points and in doing so notch up their first point.
The next time the sides met it was at Port Macquarie Regional Stadium, thanks to the pitch at Newcastle-s usual home stadium being unplayable. By now, Heart had grown into a much stronger footballing force but had still yet to pick up an away win.
However, thanks to an especially lacklustre Jets performance, Heart jumped that hurdle, with a spectacular overhead kick form Nick Kalmar and a penalty from Gerald Sibon.
Since then, the tide has turned a little once again. Jets have found a new lease of life and a have gone on a strong run of form, while Melbourne Heart have struggled to find any level of consistency.
Indeed, at home, their form has been poor since their epic derby win over rivals Melbourne Victory. With two draws, two defeats and only one goal from their last four home games, Heart, it seems, might just be there for the taking and Newcastle will surely see this as the chance to pick up a rare away win and finally have some joy against the Hyundai A-League newcomers.
