‘Massive win’ for Sydney FC: O’Neill

Sydney FC midfielder Brandon O’Neill said the three points was the only thing that mattered on Friday night after they lost for the first time last week in the Sydney Derby.

And the Sky Blues got what they wanted as they outclassed 10-man Melbourne City 3-1 on Friday night to hit the 50 point mark with six rounds to go.

O’Neill with a peach of a set-piece in between two Bobo goals was enough to see off City as the Sky Blue Premiership run got back on track after their first defeat all season last week.

Sydney FC players celebrate a goal in their 3-1 win over Melbourne City.

“To play so well in the derby last week and not to get the three points – this game was just all about the three points.

“That’s all we wanted. It didn’t matter how well we played or goals conceded we just wanted the three points to continue on our merry way and reach our goal of winning the championship and premier’s plate.

“I’m knackered but absolutely delighted,” he added with a smile.

Sky Blues coach Graham Arnold added: “The quality of the players was the difference… and we pressed very well.”

Sydney FC defender Alex Wilkinson said once they scored the Sky Blues grew in confidence.

“The red card changed the game and second half we moved them around a bit and scored a couple of goals, but great to be back to winning ways.”
