Central Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna is considering taking a risk and starting three strikers in the first leg of the Minor Semi Final against Queensland at Gosford on Friday night.
While admitting keeping the Queenslanders scoreless in the first leg at Bluetongue Stadium was crucial, McKinna also said finding the back of the net more then once would give his team a great chance of success.
Socceroos squad members Matt Simon and Dylan Macallister are certain starters up front, but McKinna is considering also starting with Nik Mrdja.
The Mariners have had plenty of success playing with three strikers during the season and the club boasts an outstanding attacking record.
“We’ve got some decisions to make before the game,” McKinna said.
“With three strikers it puts pressure on their defence. It’s a definite option.”
If McKinna starts with three strikers there will still be plenty of attacking options off the bench with Sasho Petrovski itching for a run.
In defence, McKinna has confirmed lanky central defender Paul O’Grady will start.
O’Grady, who is not signed for next season, impressed in a last round defeat against Adelaide and has retained his position alongside captain Alex Wilkinson.
Utilities Matthew Osman and Nigel Boogaard have recovered from niggling injuries and are also in contention for starting spots.
The Mariners are coming off three loses and have never beaten Queensland at home.
“We want to change that on Friday night,” McKinna said.
“The boys are pumped.”
