Five-month streak ends as Phoenix star scoops March award

Wellington Phoenix striker Mariana Speckmaier has been named Liberty A-League Player of the Month for March, after a fan vote.

The Venezuela international scored three goals in six games in March, capping off a sensational debut season in the Liberty A-League.

Speckmaier scored 10 goals and notched two assists in 21 appearances for the Phoenix this season to finish equal fifth on the league’s Golden Boot leaderboard.

Throughout the 2023-24 Liberty A-League season, 10 players are selected every month on a shortlist for you, the fans, to select from in voting for Player of the Month.

The 10 nominees are selected via the Opta Index, with the 10 highest-scoring players in the index nominated each month.

Speckmaier was the eighth-highest scorer on the Opta Index in the Liberty A-League in February, ahead of 10th-placed Courtney Newbon and Phoenix teammate Michaela Robertson in ninth, and behind Sophie Harding, Chloe Lincoln, Michelle Heyman, Casey Dumont, Cortnee Vine, Hannah Keane and Melina Ayres.

But Speckmaier dominated the fan vote, held across A-Leagues social media channels, to become the first outfield player to win the award this season.

Phoenix keeper Rylee Foster went back-to-back with the October/November and December awards, before Western United’s Hillary Beall and Newcastle’s Izzy Nino collected January and February honours respectively.
