Sydney’s teenage sensation earns Young Footballer of the Year nomination for January

Sydney FC teen Maddie Caspers has earned the January nomination for the 2023-24 Liberty A-League Young Footballer of the Year award.

Caspers was nominated by a panel of experts comprising Rae Dower, Leah Blayney, Cheryl Downes, Teo Pellizzeri, Rhali Dobson and Kate Gill.

The 16-year-old has been a revelation for the Sky Blues of late, bagging three goals in as many games including her two appearances in January.

Caspers began the month by scoring her very first Liberty A-League goal in a 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets. The equalising goal paved the way for the Sky Blues to go on and complete a comeback win.

The teenager followed up that performance with another goal against Melbourne Victory, putting Sydney ahead in a game that eventually ended 1-1.

Caspers is the fourth Young footballer of the Year this season after Melbourne Victory midfielder Alana Murphy (December), Melbourne City’s Daniela Galic (November) and Perth Glory midfielder Georgia Cassidy (October).
