When Brisbane Roar take on Adelaide United at Suncorp Stadium on ANZAC Day, Luke DeVere will spare a thought for those who fought for Australia.
DeVere’s grandfather has a long history in the armed services, while the defender has worked closely with the Returned and Services League for a number of years.
This is why Thursday’s game – the first football match to be played in Queensland on ANZAC Day – means so much to the 29-year-old centre-back.
ROBBIE FOWLER: ‘It’s taken me a long time to get back. Thankfully now I’m here’

“It’s a huge honour for the Roar to be given this game this year,” said DeVere. “Hopefully it’s something that the A-League can look at in the future, scheduling more fixtures around this day and days like it.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to support good causes and remember people who have sacrificed a lot.”
The Hyundai A-League has formed a partnership with Australian Defence Force support organisation Mates4Mates, which provides ‘life-changing’ support for ADF personnel suffering from psychological trauma.
“Anytime a big organisation can raise awareness for Anzac Day or Mates4Mates it’s very good,” DeVere said.
“It’s something the team won’t take for granted or take lightly. It’s a fantastic day.
“I’ve got a proud history with my grandfather through the armed services and also working closely with the RSL for a number of years so it’s something that’s always on my mind.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to come out and not only support the team but also support a great cause like Mates4Mates and take time to remember those that have given a lot for this country.”
Roar attacker Dylan Wenzel-Halls added: “It will be an honour to remember the past and present serving ANZAC’s…and it will be amazing for the league.
“Sport, in general, goes hand-in-hand with these kinds of days so it will be good to get a good crowd out and enjoy a game of footy, but also remember the past and present ANZACs that served for our country.”
Thursday’s match has extra special significance for Roar, besides the ANZAC Day commemorations.
Skipper Matt McKay will play his last match for the club before retiring, while the departing Henrique – who misses the match with a groin injury – will also be honoured.
