Steven Gerrard and his English Premier League club Liverpool could be heading back to Australia next year, according to Brisbane’s Courier Mail.
The newspaper is reporting that Liverpool officials are in Brisbane this week to negotiate a deal to take on current Hyundai A-League champions Brisbane Roar in 2015 at Suncorp.
“While discussions between TEQ (Tourism and Events Queensland) and prospective event proponents remain confidential, we are always looking at opportunities to bring high-calibre sporting events to Queensland that deliver tourism and economic outcomes,’’ a TEQ representative told the Courier Mail.
More than 95,000 fans packed the MCG when the Reds played Melbourne Victory at the MCG in July last year, generating huge interest and coverage around the world.
While Liverpool have had a slow start to the English Premier League season, they still possess a squad full of world-class talent.
Gerrard headlines but the likes of Italian striker Mario Balotelli and English internationals Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson are big drawcards.
There’s no doubt the 52,500 capacity at Suncorp Stadium would be filled if Brendan Rodgers’ side came to Brisbane.
The Roar have hosted two British clubs in the past at Suncorp, taking on Scottish club Celtic in 2009 as well as Everton 12 months later.
