Lengthy lay-off worth the wait, says Adelaide’s fit-again Absalonsen

Johan Absalonsen is adamant his injury troubles are behind him after scoring on his long-awaited return to Adelaide United’s starting XI.

Absalonsen broke the deadlock against Melbourne City on Friday night in what was his first start in almost five months.

The hosts were unable to hold on as City clawed back a 1-1 draw, but the return of the Danish winger could be the boost Adelaide need to sew up a Finals Series spot.

“I’m feeling very good. I’m ready to contribute to the team again and hopefully I can make a difference in the last four games,” Absalonsen told Fox Sports.

“Of course I need some match fitness and some sharpness in my game, but I got a really good feeling on the pitch and I feel like I joined the team in a good way.

“I’m mentally over [the thigh injury] now. I’ve been out for so long and been in rehab for a long time.

“We made an agreement to all be sure my body was 100 per cent fit again to play before I entered the pitch.

“That’s why I’m feeling good now and I have no concerns about getting injured again.”

Reds boss Marco Kurz hailed Absalonsen and striker Dzengis Cavusevic, who returned from suspension, for adding a “different level” of class to Adelaide’s attack.

“These players are so important for us,” Kurz said.

“We are happy [to have them back]. We need every player in our squad for the last games.”
