Victory provide update on Thomas injury

Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas has been cleared of serious injury following a sickening collision in his side’s loss to Newcastle Jets on  Saturday night.

The club later confirmed Thomas had travelled back to Melbourne with the team and would continue to be monitored in the coming days.

Thomas was stretchered from the field in the second half after a heavy collision with Jets attacker Andrew Nabbout.

Speaking at the post-match media conference, Muscat confirmed Thomas was taken to hospital as a precaution.

“It was a decent collision from what I saw so hopefully he’ll be fine,” Muscat said.

“I don’t know exactly, but they’ve ruled out major things so hopefully it’s just precautionary taking him to hospital and making sure that he’s OK.”

Lawrence Thomas was taken from the field against Newcastle.

A wasteful Victory were left to rue a host of missed chances at McDonald Jones Stadium, with Nigel Boogaard and Riley McGree netting for Newcastle in a 2-0 win.

Besart Berisha spurned a number of decent opportunities, while Leigh Broxham struck the post with a late header.

But it was the manner in which Victory conceded the first goal – a set piece on the half-hour mark – which Muscat felt turned the game.

“We created a number of chances, possibly twice as many strikes on goal as them,”Muscat said.

“They’re all stats and you can make of them whatever you want, but I thought conceding the first goal when we did, in the manner that we did, that concentration when it’s a set-piece is vital.

“Because I thought we were starting to impose ourselves on the game, away from home here in Newcastle and then to concede off that set-piece – whether it was a foul or not is another question – but that moment there, those moments are huge.”
