Sydney FC has opened the Vitezslav Lavicka era with a 1-0 win over State League side the Macarthur Rams at Lynwood Park on Wednesday night.

The Czech coach took charge of his first official match and would have been pleased with what he saw, with Brendan Gan scoring the goal which decided a match watched by around 3000 fans.

However, an injury to Simon Colosimo sent a scare through the Sydney camp with the experienced midfielder taken to hospital for tests after coughing up blood at half-time.

Colosimo, who missed much of last season with a groin injury, has played just five Hyundai A-League games for Sydney since joining the club at the start of last season.

He had crashed to the ground heavily after contesting a header early in the game, but the club said it believes the injury is not serious and the trip to hospital was a precaution.

Gan’s well-taken 10th-minute header was the highlight of the match, while Macarthur goalkeeper Roy Bell did well to preserve that margin, denying Sydney on several occasions.

Steve Corica and John Aloisi sat out the match as they continue to work on a modified pre-season campaign.

The Sky Blues’ next match is against the Bankstown City Lions in Sefton next Wednesday.
