The Lady Reds claimed an impressive 2-1 victory over Melbourne Victory thanks to a stirring second half comeback at Adelaide Shores Football Centre on Wednesday night.
The match started with a bang as a penalty was awarded to Melbourne Victory in only the second minute. Victory’s Lauren Barnes penalty kick was brilliantly saved by Lady reds keeper Melissa Barbieri but Barnes showed football smarts to follow the rebound and tap it in from close range.
At the other end, the Lady Reds were eager to press high and some exceptional work by captain Kristy Moore forced a turnover which resulted in Moore being played on, only to be given offside.
The second half proved just as entertaining as the first with both teams creating good chances. Victory’s Racheal Quigly with the best chance for the victory as Lady Reds midfielder Lisa Marie-Woods provided plenty of threat too.
Then on the 80th minute, the Lady Reds seized a critical equalising goal after a handball in the penalty box was calmly slotted by Woods. It proved to be a critical juncture in the game.
With some new found belief, the Lady Reds struck again, this time a wonder goal from outside the box byTiarn Powell. After showing some good control, Powell unleashed a blistering shot that many keepers would struggle to keep out.
The game took another dramatic turn when Victory’s Barnes had a penalty denied by the woodwork.
The Lady Reds face Brisbane Roar Women on Novermber 8 at Suncorp Stadium.
