Sydney FC coach John Kosmina is still confident his side can make a late run and win a spot in the Hyundai A-League finals series.
Melbourne Victory’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Sydney FC on Saturday night consigned Kosmina’s club to its third consecutive defeat and they now find themselves in sixth position on the A-League ladder and some three points behind the fourth placed Central Coast Mariners.
But Kosmina is refusing to panic and feels that if his team can re-produce the same performance they did against the Victory then it will only be a matter of time before they start winning.
“It makes it difficult for us now and we have got to start winning some games,” Kosmina said after the loss.
“But if we keep playing like that we will.”
Sydney FC looked to be cruising when they scored two goals in the opening four minutes of its game against Melbourne, but it soon found itself on the back foot when Archie Thompson and Nick Ward struck back for the home side.
Ney Fabiano prodded home the winner in the 80th minute for the Victory, but Sydney FC did have its chance to score a late equaliser through Mark Bridge.
While Kosmina didn’t want to say that his team out played Melbourne, he did point out that a lot of the match statistics favoured his side.
“Statistically we had more possession and entries into the penalty area were pretty even,” he said.
“As much as they threw a lot of things at us, we made it difficult for them and I thought we played some decent football.”
“We lost a little bit of attention with their first goal and that was what gave Melbourne a bit of confidence.”
“Had we have switched on for that and now allowed it to happen, it could have been a vastly different story.”
“But that was a good performance and you can’t take anything away from the players.”
In good news for Sydney FC, star midfielder Simon Colosimo is expected to return from injury in the club’s Youth League clash against Melbourne on Sunday.
Should Colosimo get through the match unscathed then he is expected to be available for Sydney FC’s Round 18 clash against Adelaide United next week.
