Katie Gill – Star of the Week

Perth Glory’s Katie Gill turned in a stellar performance against Newcastle Jets.

After a stunning display against the Newcastle Jets, in which she scored a second-half hat-trick and helped her side return to the top of the Westfield W-League table with a bang, Katie Gill is our very deserving star performer of the week.

The 27-year-old Matilda came back to haunt her former club with three wonderful strikes, and the victory sees Perth once again leading the charge for the W-League title, one point clear of Canberra United.

Katie isn’t getting carried away despite the big win however as she knows how easy it is to drop unexpected points.

“Football is a funny game,” Katie blogged after the game. “One week you are struggling to find reasons why you have thrown away three points and the next you are handing a team a 6-1 thumping!”

Following two seasons plying her trade abroad, where she starred for Swedish clubs Sunnanå SK and LdB FC Malmö, the striker settled back into the W-League with Perth after beginning her football career in Newcastle.

“I have to say it was strange playing in my home town of Newcastle, but at the end of the day when you’re on the field none of that matters. All that matters is the colour of the shirt you have on and doing the best for your team.”

Auckland-born Gill has been a regular for the Australian national team since 2005 and has an incredible goal-scoring record for the Matildas. Having been called up again for the national squad alongside teammates Collette McCallum and Lisa De Vanna, Katie believes the Glory will face stiff opposition this weekend as several W-League regulars head over for the East Asian Cup qualifiers.

“This weekend’s game against Sydney is going to be a tight contest, as both teams will be without their Matildas players. However I have no doubt that the Glory girls will perform and come away with the win.”

Congratulations to Katie Gill and her Glory teammates for their wonderful win at the weekend. With Perth now tentative favourites to challenge for the title, round 5 in the W-League looks set to be very interesting as we creep towards the season’s halfway mark.
