Johnny Warren
Johnny Warren, MBE, OAM (17 May 1943 – 6 November 2004) was an Australian football (soccer) player, coach, administrator, writer and broadcaster. He spent his youth playing club football in Sydney, primarily for Canterbury-Marrickville and St George Budapest. Warren made his full international debut for Australia in November 1965 against Cambodia in Phnom Penh.
After he retired from playing football, Johnny worked in television, commentating football for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Special Broadcasting Service television networks. It was at SBS where he made his mark, appearing on a number of football analysis shows including On the Ball and The World Game.
Johnny was a recipient of the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit which was presented by FIFA President Sepp Blatter in 2004. Today, the award for the best player in the A-League is named the Johnny Warren Medal in his honour.
About the Foundation
The Foundation-s roles are reasonably broad and extend from raising additional resources for the advancement of football in Australia, to improving player and coach development, providing football education and soon the Foundation hopes to be encouraging a love of the game to disadvantaged and indigenous Australians throughout the country.
Since 2005 the Foundation has been focused on the identification, coaching and development of talented young players. While the Foundation plans to continue elite coaching and youth development, we intend to begin a charitable program in the near future. This program will focus on providing opportunities for disadvantaged and indigenous children to play football and participate in the game in a meaningful way.
National Skills Acquisition Program (The Skilleroos)
The Foundation has recently become a sponsor of the Football Federation of Australia-s (FFA) National Skills Acquisition Program (now named the Skilleroos program). This allows the Foundation to continue its role in the development of Australia-s elite youth talent and keeps it at the forefront of the Australian football future. It is hoped that this partnership between the Foundation and the FFA will allow Australia to produce future superstars for years to come and takes the Foundation-s work to national level.
Charity/community program
The Foundation is currently starting a community program that will provide football coaching and opportunities for disadvantaged children in combination with regional communities and school attendance programs.
