Wanderers bring ‘experienced’ Aussie defender home from Europe for finals tilt

Western Sydney Wanderers have signed central defender Joshua Laws on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The 26-year-old centre back joins having most recently played for Swiss side Grasshoppers and will add Isuzu UTE A-leagues experience to a Wanderers backline short on numbers.

“I’ve been playing overseas for a couple of years and knew that when I came back, I would want to play for a passionate club like the Wanderers,” said Laws after putting pen-to-paper on his short-term deal.

“I grew up here in Sydney so I’ll enjoy having family and friends in the crowd as well.

“Wanderers has always been a tough team to play against and you felt the energy of the supporters driving the team on.

“You can see how much it means to the members and fans, so I’m excited to be playing for them now.

“I want to get straight into training and playing, help get the club up the ladder where it belongs and have success this season.”

With experienced South Korean central defender Jeong Tae-wook still out with an ankle injury, the Wanderers have added depth to what is a youthful central defensive unit.

“It’s great to bring an experienced defender with both excellent A-league and European knowledge as we head into the final stages of the season to fight for a Finals position.”

Beginning his career in the academy system of English Championship side Blackburn Rovers, Laws spent time with German side Dusseldorf before making the move to New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix.

The central defender made 50 appearances across three seasons with the ‘Nix before securing himself a move to Zurich with Grasshoppers.

Having arrived in Western Sydney, Laws has now joined up with his teammates and is eligible for the Wanderers’ home clash with Macarthur Bulls at CommBank Stadium in Round 19.
