Newcastle Jets and Canberra United played out a scoreless draw in Round 5 of the Westfield W-League 2015/16 season at Magic Park Broadmeadow on Saturday.
The match certainly did not lack opportunities, however both sides defended well, and simply could not convert at the other end.
In the first half, goalkeepers Hannah Southwell and Lydia Williams for the Jets and Canberra respectfully, made a number of key saves, ensuring their sides entered the half-time break locked at 0-0.
As she did in their Round 4 match against the Wanderers, Jets’ forward Rhali Dobson caused headaches for Canberra United’s defence, and almost opened the scoring in the 42nd minute but curled a shot over the bar from inside the penalty area.
Canberra’s Ashleigh Sykes and Michelle Heyman were threatening at the other end, however both sides knew they would need to lift their games in the front third to crack the deadlock after the break.
The second half was almost identical to the first, as both sides attempted to register the opening goal but could not find the back of the net.
Canberra began to dominate late in the match, however could not find a goal despite a number of dangerous attacks, including a bullet Heyman header that was saved by a diving Southwell.
The Jets looked set to produce a winner however an Adriana Jones one-on-one shot, which was the final kick of the game, fell onto the roof of the net, and the match finished 0-0.
The draw sees the Jets move to five points and Canberra to four. Next week Newcastle travel to take on Adelaide United, and Canberra are away again against Sydney FC.
