Record reached: Jets surpass all-time Membership mark

Last season’s Hyundai A-League grand finalists Newcastle Jets have set an all-time membership record in the club’s history.

The current figure of 11,320 surpasses the mark that was targeted by Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna at the start of the season, beating the previous record set in the Hyundai A-League 2012/13 Season.

The number is well clear of what the Jets finished with last year, when they had 9200 members off the back of a superb season on the pitch where Ernie Merrick’s men finished second and played in the Grand Final.

Jets CEO McKinna said the record is a reward for the club’s focus on community engagement and praised the players for their work attending local clubs, clinics, events and fundraisers.

“The stuff the players from each of our squads are doing in the community is a different class,” McKinna said.

“For everyone from the players, staff, sponsors and community to buy into what we’re doing has been so important in reaching this milestone – we want to be a community club and we want to keep engaging with our fans.

“We set a target of just over 11,300 and we’re well over that just seven weeks into the season, we’ve had outstanding support from our Members and fans.

“A lot of people probably thought that the target [11,300] was a bridge to far, but the whole town has got behind the team and we’re so thankful for that.

“I’m just very proud to be a small part in making this happen, and huge credit must go to everyone involved.”

The Newcastle Jets will host Perth Glory this Sunday, before heading to the Central Coast to take on the Mariners in the F3 Derby the following Sunday.
