Newcastle Jets have pulled off a huge coup ahead of the Westfield W-League 2017/18 Season, signing former Boston Breakers and Western Sydney Wanderers forward Katie Stengel.
Stengel joins the Jets after a season on-loan with the Wanderers on loan in 2016/17, in addition to stints with the Washington Spirit and Bayern Munich.
The American U-23 international is a lethal attacking player, finishing as the Wanderers’ leading scorer last season.
“I think Katie’s record speaks for itself and to have a player of her calibre here in Newcastle is fantastic for the club,” Jets boss Craig Deans said.
“She’s performed at the highest level and is a genuine goal scorer which will really complement the type of football we want to play this season.
“Aside from what she offers on the pitch, Katie’s experience is going to be so valuable to some of our younger girls coming through – she’s played in World Cups and at some of the biggest clubs in the world.”
Stengel is expected to make her Jets debut in the season-opening clash against her former club at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday, 29 October.
“I’ve only been here a few days but Newcastle is a beautiful place and I’m really looking forward to getting into training,” said Stengel.
“Craig has put together a really exciting squad of players and I think this season will be a really enjoyable one both on and off the park.
“It’s awesome to be back in Australia again, the W-League is going from strength to strength and I’m really happy to be a part of that with Jets this season.”
