The Newcastle Jets recorded a solid 2-1 victory over the Brisbane Roar in a pre-season friendly at Ballymore Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Jason Hoffman opened the scoring for the visitors, but the Roar were rewarded for their hard work on the stroke of half-time after a cracking strike from Sergio van Dijk leveled the scores.

However, the match turned in the 58th minute when Brisbane midfielder Robbie Kruse handled a goal-bound shot and was shown a straight red card by referee Chris Beath.

Ljubo Milicevic stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball home to restore the Jets’ lead and despite increased pressure from the Roar, they were unable to find an equaliser.
