The Newcastle Jets have continued their impressive pre-season with a 2-0 victory over a star-studded Sydney United on Sunday night.
With strong wins against Melbourne Heart and a combined Newcastle side under their belt, the Jets continued to build momentum for the new Hyundai A-League season with a strong display against the NSW Premier League side that featured Zeljko Kalac, Craig Moore, Tony Popovic, Ante Milicic and Mark Rudan.
The Jets struck twice in the first half with goals to Ali Abbas and new signing Jeremy Brockie.
The scoreline could have been greater were it not for some superb saves by United’s Kalac.
The former AC Milan shot-stopper denied Labinot Haliti on 10 minutes with a superb low save but could do nothing four minutes later to stop Abbas who was left with a simple tap-in after good lead-up work by Brockie.
The Jets claimed their second goal just before the break when the New Zealand international headed home Adam D’Apuzzo’s pinpoint cross.
In a positive for the Hyundai A-League club both Jobe Wheelhouse and Ruben Zadkovich returned from injury to earn some game time in the second half.
The Jets next take on close rivals Central Coast on Thursday at Frank Millington Field in Budgewoi.
