The Newcastle Jets have received a body blow ahead of Saturday afternoon’s crucial Hyundai A-League clash against Perth with skipper Jobe Wheelhouse out with a virus.

Wheelhouse, who missed last week’s 5-2 loss to the Phoenix in Wellington, has been hospitalised with a virus and has been delcared unfit to play against the Glory.

Brazilian defender Tiago Calvano will wear the captain’s armband for the second consecutrive week.

“Jobe hasn’t been able to respond to medicine so he won’t be in the squad this week,” Jets coach Gary van Egmond said on the club’s official website.

“It is clearing up but it is taking longer than we thought, so we will monitor that and play it by ear for the Gold Coast game.

“Tiago is an easy decision as captain because of his leadership qualities, the way he coaches on the field, the way he conducts himself at training and the respect the players have for him.”

Meanwhile, van Egmond has confirmed English import Michael Bridges has earned his first starting spot this season.

“I thought Bridgey was excellent in the second half against Wellington,” van Egmond said.

“He brings a lot of creativity to that area, he can score goals and can hold the ball up.”
