Jets eyeing Glory scalp

The Newcastle Jets are aiming to build on their shock 1-0 win over defending Westfield W-League champions Melbourne Victory when they host Perth Glory this weekend.

Perth also commenced the season with a victory in the opening round when the side defeated Brisbane Roar 2-1 last weekend on home soil.

Perth coach Jamie Harnwell has recruited well during the off season, adding six Matildas to his line up including returning Glory players Collette McCallum, Kate Gill and Caitlin Foord.

Additionally, Sam Kerr, Alanna Kennedy and Mackenzie Arnold have all made the switch from the east coast to west to play out the 2014 WWL season with Perth Glory.

Perth Glory player and foundation Newcastle Jet Kate Gill scored a brace last weekend against Brisbane, solidifying her title as 2013 Golden Boot Winner and will be a player to watch this weekend.

The Jets will be solid in defence against Gill and her combatants as the squad boasts an impressive back line including the likes of returning players Hayley Crawford and Ashley Spina, as well as US recruit Katherine Reynolds and Georgia Yeoman-Dale previously of Canberra United.

The Jets have similar strength in their firing line where US-born players Tori Huster and Angela Salem work well in front of goals alongside Jets captain Emily van Egmond and Vice Captain Tara Andrews.

Salem was the sole goal scorer in the Round 1 match against Melbourne and is in top form to continue to add to her tally on Saturday.

Both sides are ready to put Season 7 behind them, a season in which the Jets were handed the wooden spoon, and scored their only point in the final round, while Perth narrowly missed a Semi Finals berth after ending the season in 5th place.

Newcastle and Perth welcomed a number of new faces into their ranks this season and with each on the prowl for another win, the Round 2 fixture should prove to be a thrilling and closely contested joust.
