The Woodlands Wellington coach has been invited to be interviewed by Jets Advisory Board chairman Ray Baartz and his committee members for the Head Coach position for the upcoming 2014/2015 A-League season, and is expected to depart for the meeting soon, reports the website.
Stewart won the League Cup with Balestier Khalsa last season and helped the team finish fourth in the league, their highest position ever in the history of the club.
This led him to win the Coach of the Year award at the Goal Singapore Football Awards last year.
Stewart, who is from Newcastle and has represented the Socceroos three times in the early 1990s, played for Newcastle Breakers in the old NSL in the 1990s.
The 47-year-old moved to Malaysia then Singapore in the 1990s first as a player and later transitioned into coaching where he-s quietly built his reputation away from the spotlight of the A-League.
Jets- interim head coach Clayton Zane, who took over after the club parted ways with Gary Van Egmond in January, is the current interim coach at Hunter Stadium and is battling to get the club into the Hyundai A-League finals.
Newcastle has stated they will decide on a permanent coach at the end of the season.
