Newcastle’s frustrating start to the National Youth League ended on Friday night when the Jets scored an emphatic 4-0 win against Central Coast.
The Jets led 2-0 at half-time before talented youngsters James Virgili and Brodie Mooy sealed the three points with two late goals at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford.
The win now moves the Jets equal on points with the Mariners.
While the Mariners missed several good chances, the Jets were more clinical in front of goal.
Jesse Pinto opened the scoring with a deflected free kick in the 21st minute. Pinto’s strike from the edge of the box hit a Mariners defender and left goalkeeper Matthew Nash with no chance.
The Mariners then created some chances but seven minutes from the break the Jets were two goals up when Adrian Karakolevski netted a spectacular goal from long range.
Shortly after scoring in brilliant fashion, Karakolevski missed a much easier opportunity.
Some words from coach Alex Tobin sparked the Mariners into life after the resumption.
Brodie Smith was dangerous in attack while at the back the Mariners looked stronger.
But the game was as good as over in the 83rd minute when Virgili beat the offside trap and rounded Nash to score.
Mooy’s goal capped off what was a very impressive performance from the Craig Deans-coached Jets.
