Jets boss excited to be Hyundai A-League’s entertainers

Newcastle Jets manager Ernie Merrick has hailed his team’s attacking ethos following the comprehensive 4-1 defeat of Melbourne Victory on Thursday night.

Merrick’s men temporarily returned to the top of the table with a well-deserved three points and have now scored 20 goals in just eight games, nine more than any other side.

The former Victory and Wellington Phoenix boss was encouraged by Newcastle’s relentless attitude following Mark Milligan’s first half dismissal.

“We kept playing football from beginning to end. We didn’t resort to long ball or just shutting the shop up at the end,” Merrick said at his post-match press conference.

“The boys wanted a fifth goal and I quite like that attitude.

“That type of football is what brings the crowds in and entertains people.

While his team are currently 10 points inside the top six and on course for a first Finals Series appearance since 2009/10, Merrick is simply content to enjoy the moment.

“I would play down all that talk. We’re picking up points, that’s the main thing,” he said.

“I’ve never looked at it as a long way to go.

“It’s another 19 games to look forward to and another 19 games for excitement.”
